Respond to urgent actions

You can take international solidarity by responding to action requests from our Southern partners.

Violence against trade unions, the expulsion of small producers and the violation of human rights are a daily occurrence in banana and pineapple producing countries. Make Fruit Fair receives many urgent action requests from our partner organisations asking for support. We will keep you informed of how the Urgent Actions we issue progress.

Respect and dignity for women agricultural workers

In Honduras, melons represent 11% of agricultural exports. They are mainly cultivated by women who represent two thirds of the workforce. Human rights violations in the industry are numerous and include precarious contracts, long work days, salaries below the national minimum, discrimination and virtually non existent access to health services. Our partner, COSIBAH (the Latin American bananas agroindustrial workers’ union coordinating body in Honduras), has appealed for the multinational fruit company Fyffes to ensure that their principal Honduran subsidiary, Suragro, respects the rights of their workers. COSIBAH also asks that the Ministry of Labour enforces the effective implementation of labour laws in the industry.

Ecuador: a multimillionaire violates labour rights

Friday 9 December 2011 was a dismal day for Lester Gustavo Freire Burgos and for union rights in Ecuador. On this day, Mr. Freire Burgos, an employee and the Secretary General of the FENACLE union at the Los Alamos banana plantation, was fired and removed from his workplace by security agents. With no official justification, he was forced to leave his job after thirteen years of service on the plantation owned by the multinational fruit company, Noboa. Confronted with this new - but far from isolated - act of repression, FENACLE is calling for international solidarity to demand that Noboa management reinstate the worker and cease their anti-union practices.
